Which states require salary ranges in job postings in 2026

Fourteen states plus Washington DC now require a pay range in the posting itself. Remote postings can trigger all of them at once.

  • Range required on requestCT, RI

Thresholds, benefit rules, and penalties differ by state. A snapshot shows which ones your postings actually trigger.

Based on the Clockspot guide (May 2026), updated for the Virginia and Maine laws that took effect in July 2026.

What we check on every posting

Each posting gets the same review, and every finding comes with a plain-English fix.

  • A real pay range is listedNot "competitive salary" or "DOE," but an actual minimum and maximum.
  • The range looks like a good-faith estimateA $50,000 to $200,000 spread for one role is a red flag in several states.
  • Benefits are described where requiredWashington, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey and others want more than pay.
  • Remote and multi-state reachWhich state and city laws a posting triggers based on where people can apply from.
  • New postings and editsEvery week, so a new template doesn't quietly undo your fixes.
  • New and changing lawsVirginia and Maine started in 2026 and Delaware follows in 2027. We keep the rules current.

Hi, I'm Glenn. I've spent 12+ years inside HR systems.

I'm an HR technology consultant. I've worked on recruiting, reporting, security, and HR business processes at large employers for more than 12 years, so I know how job posting templates get built and how easily they drift.

Pay transparency rules change every few months, and a template that works in one state can break in another. I started PostRight HR to catch those gaps before a plaintiff's firm does. You won't get software to learn. You get a clear report, a short list of fixes, and a real person to email.

Questions people ask

Is this legal advice?

No. We're not a law firm. We monitor and flag postings against published state and city rules. For decisions about your pay ranges or legal exposure, talk to your employment counsel. Our dated reports make that conversation faster.

Do pay transparency laws apply to remote jobs?

Often, yes. Several states apply their laws to remote roles their residents can apply for, no matter where the employer is based. That's the most common way companies get caught.

Do you need access to our systems?

No. We only read the job postings you already publish. Most hiring systems, like Greenhouse, Lever, and Ashby, publish them as a public feed for your careers page.

What about postings on Indeed, LinkedIn, or by our recruiters?

Many state laws hold the employer responsible for third-party postings too. We focus on your careers page, since that's usually what other boards copy. Send us links to outside postings and we'll check those too.

What happens after the free snapshot?

Nothing, unless you want it to. If the report shows gaps, we'll offer the pilot. If your postings are clean, we'll tell you that too.
